Motor vehicle owners and lessees in Georgia are required to maintain continuous mandatory liability insurance coverage on their vehicle(s) to:
- Legally drive the vehicle(s)
- Register and obtain Georgia license plates (tags)
- Renew, replace, or transfer their existing Georgia license plates (tags).
Non-motorized vehicles, i.e. trailers, campers, etc., and vehicles exempt from registration in this state, i.e. snowmobiles, bicycles, mopeds, all-terrain vehicles, golf carts, etc., do not require insurance coverage.
The minimum liability coverage amounts are:
- $25,000 for bodily injury or death to one person.
- $50,000 total per accident for bodily injury or death.
- $25,000 for damage to property.
Fines and Penalties
When an insurer transmits a notice of insurance termination to the state electronic insurance information system, it triggers a 30-day period for new liability insurance information to be transmitted to the database. If insurance information is transmitted within the 30-day period and there has been no coverage lapse (10 or more days with no record of insurance), a valid insurance coverage indicator remains on the vehicle record.
If a lapse does occur, the vehicle owner must pay a $25 lapse fee within 30 days of receiving notice of the lapse, or the vehicle registration will be suspended. The owner must then pay the lapse fee and a $60 reinstatement fee in order to have the suspension canceled. The second occurrence of a lapse within a five-year period requires a 90-day suspension. A third occurrence will result in a six-month suspension; the reinstatement fee after a third occurrence is $160.
